Biography: Torres
Carlos Torres was born in 1955, in Bogota, Columbia.
He is interested by the world of art at a very early age. This passion leads him to develop, over the years, a unique comprehension of the energy and spirituality of the human condition.
Torres starts his academic studies in the anthropology department of Bogota’s National University, but the call of the arts is so strong that, at midpoint, he changes course and finally completes a degree in fine arts. His studies in anthropology have nevertheless exposed him to the artefacts of the Ancients: the artist recognises that this experience has profoundly influenced his artistic work and lead him to explore a warm earth-tone palette and create rich organic textures.
Carlos Torres immigrated to the United States in 1980, viewing this new country as the ideal springboard for his artistic endeavours. From then on, his works have been on exhibit although the United States, as well as in Brazil, Columbia, Mexico and Peru. He now lives in Southern California with his wife, an artist in her own right, and their three daughters. The couple’s close bond and their common passion for art have allowed him to stay on track and increasingly develop his artistic approach.
When describing his work, Torres talks of “Organic Abstraction”. His paintings and sculptures always feature geometrical shapes that mingle in a fascinating harmony. He is inspired by the lavishness of nature which, according to him, is simply the representation of geometry. The artist’s palette is expansive and warm, completely dedicated to textural sensuality.
“Through the language of art, we are able to look at our world with new perspective, for it communicates the subtleties of life to us at their most basic levels. Art touches us all, for it has an eternal soul, a nature that expresses feelings with unmatched clarity.”
The energetic magnetism that emanates from each painting created by Carlos Torress thrusts the spectator in a contemplative state where the here and now takes on its true meaning.
