Self-taught, Mario Carrier has been perfecting the art of fire for years, then decides to combine glass with stone, bronze and aluminum. From that day on his creativity becomes limitless. He develops his own signature and his works dazzle, intrigue, seduce.
He bends, polishes, chisels, cuts, shapes and sculpts his hand-blown glass. He cuts, engraves, rubs and polishes the stone. He works, handles, welds and crafts the bronze and aluminum. He transforms matter, giving it a new meaning. He anchors, fuses, amalgamates, assembles and unifies, constantly searching for new ways of creating a cohabitation of opacity and translucency.
Highly physical, his work draws on a variety of techniques and media that he is constantly exploring, leading him to a spectrum of infinite possibilities. Nestled in the heart of Inverness, the studio in which his work takes shape is fascinating. On one side, massive furnaces where liquescent and incandescent glass eagerly awaits his breath; on the other, metamorphic stones, serpentine, granite, marble, bronze and aluminum beckon his touch. And in between, his favorite tools: chisels, pliers, blades, torches, rods, wetter, pontils and polishers.
Carrier is renowned for his vases and solis flowers, glass pendants, oil lamps, angel tears, friendship balls, funerary urns and trophies.
At ROCCIA, it was love at first sight for his heart sculptures. A heart he deconstructs and reinvents. The meeting of glass and stone sets up a dialogue between transparency and opacity that seduced us. Like a poem that wavers between finesse and rawness, Carrier brings fluidity and rigidity together. This duality creates a balance between light and shadow that makes his works unique. And then there’s the spectrum of colors and pigments he selects, a pure enchantment for the eyes. Emeralds to azure blues, scarlet reds, burnt oranges and acidic yellows all collide with the full range of grays found in stone and granite: ash, charcoal, amber, pearl, anthracite and graphite.
If you’ve not already done so, Mario Carrier is undoubtedly an artist worth discovering, as are his unique and unparalleled creations.
